Native plants and winter gardening. What??? How does one garden in the winter?
Well, other than house plants, winter sowing is a great, family-friendly way to get your hands in the dirt one more time before snow blankets the ground.
Most native plants need cold stratification - that is, a period of exposure to cold moist conditions that mimics their natural growth cycle. Winter sowing is a way to start your seeds in a confined space so you can confidently identify the seedlings in the spring.
If you’re interested but have no idea where to start, we’ve got you covered!
The Garden Club of Kent is offering a winter sowing workshop for native -to-northeastern-Ohio seeds on January 11, 2026, at 1:00 pm in the Ode to Joy building at 480 Ravenna Road, Kent/Streetsboro. The event is open to the public and there is no charge to attend except for the seed starting soil that will be available for $1 per scoop. Some seeds will be provided but if you have a supply, please bring enough to share. Please identify all seeds by their scientific names. You will need to bring your own razor knife, twist-ties, and empty, rinsed, transparent or translucent (not opaque) jugs. Gallon milk jugs are most often used but other similar containers can work, too.
If you aren’t sure if a plant is native to our area, you can visit this link Native Plants Lists | Ohio Department of Natural Resources and if you’re not sure about this whole idea, please read one or more of the book(s) by Dr. Doug Tallamy. The Nature of Oaks; Nature’s Best Hope; Bringing Nature Home; and How Can I Help? for inspiration.
