Hopkins Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 425 is being recognized in the national VFW Still Serving campaign for its outstanding commitment to veterans and the community. The initiative (todaysvfw.org) emphasizes the importance of veterans’ continued service after the military.
The Post continually supports the Eden Prairie community through donations and services. The most recent example was the Hopkins VFW National Day of Service – Fall Follow Up Buckthorn Bust on Labor Day. Members of the Post and volunteers pulled buckthorn in Birch Island Woods. The invasive plant crowds out native plants, degrades soil and habitat and increases erosion and sediment in nearby waters.
Among the volunteers were Eden Prairie Council Member Lisa Toomey, City Forestry and Natural Resources Supervisor Karli Wittner and State Senator Steve Cwodzinski.
“When buckthorn is removed, it creates space for native trees, flowers, and wildlife to thrive again,” said Toomey. “The City Council is grateful to groups like the Hopkins VFW and theep Friends of Eden Prairie Parks for their continued efforts to eradicate buckthorn in Eden Prairie’s parks.”
Tommy Johnson, Post member, said service is second nature. “As veterans, we believe it is our duty to Still Serve because the call to help others does not end when the military uniform comes off.”
