Human Rights Day 2025 in DC highlights the power of awareness and education.

Washington, DC — December 10, 2025 — Community leaders, human rights advocates, educators, and guests gathered at the Founding Church of Scientology of Washington, DC, to observe Human Rights Day 2025, commemorating the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The event, hosted by United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights DC, brought attendees together for an afternoon of education, dialogue, and reflection on the state of human rights both globally and locally.

Following a luncheon and networking session, Brennan Hurd, Senior Executive, officially welcomed guests and opened the program. Hurd emphasized the significance of Human Rights Day and the importance of education in addressing ongoing human rights challenges in today’s world.

The program continued with remarks from Beth Akiyama, Executive Director of the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office, who spoke on behalf of the United for Human Rights DC Chapter. Akiyama highlighted the role of human rights education as a preventive solution and outlined ongoing partnerships and outreach initiatives aimed at increasing awareness and engagement throughout the Washington, DC, area.

Porscha Lee Taylor, President of Youth for Human Rights DC, followed with an overview of youth-focused programs and community engagement efforts designed to empower young people with knowledge of their human rights and responsibilities. Taylor underscored the importance of educating youth as a foundation for long-term change.

A central feature of the event was a private screening of the documentary Motherland Connect, now available on Amazon Prime. The film explores themes of identity, connection, and human dignity, aligning closely with the principles recognized on Human Rights Day.

The observance concluded with a question-and-answer session, closing remarks, and a guided Human Rights Exhibit Tour, led by the National Affairs Office. The tour offered attendees an interactive look at the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and how they apply in everyday life.

The Human Rights Day Open House reinforced a shared commitment to advancing human rights through education, awareness, and community collaboration—locally in Washington, DC, and globally.
