Our mission at Englewood School is to work together for the total development of every child.
The idea of having an elementary school in the Englewood area started when Englewood was still only a rural community. Students living in the area at the time had to go to Benvenue before the area was taken into the ciry.
Englewood Methodist Church became the headquarters for several organizational meetings. A pre-school clinic was held by Mrs. Boone Grant in the Sunday School part of the church.
Under N. B. Blaylock, president of the Rocky Mount Parent-Teacher Association, a P.T.A. was formed and officers elected. Serving as first president was Don A. Biggerstaff.
Englewood School officially opened its door on September 2, 1960. With ten teachers and 323 students, the school consisted of eight grades. After the first year the seventh and eighth grades were transferred to the newly built George R. Edwards Junior High School.
As the Englewood area increased in size, so did the school. With about 500 pupils, Englewood Elementary School is one of the city's largest elementary schools.
Englewood Elementary School is a 45 year old traditional K-5 school located in the hub of Rocky Mount. Englewood serves 660 students. The current population is 48.3% African American, 44.8% Caucasian, 2% Asian, 2.9% Multi-Racial, .6% American Indian, and 1.4% Hispanic. The female population is 51.2% and the male population is 48.8%.
One of the key factors to the success of Englewood is the Staff. The average experience of the Staff is 17 years. Englewood is fortunate to have a dedicated staff committed to it's mission of working together for the total development of every child through continued professional development.
