Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the U.S. Slightly smaller than Hawaii’s big island, it is emerald green, rugged, mountainous terrain; home to the world’s largest land carnivore, the Kodiak brown bear. At sea, you’ll see a plethora of marine mammals and birds. Up to six species of whales summer here. There are harbor seals, sea lions and sea otters to keep you company. Comical puffins and numerous diving birds liven up the scene.

The island has a lengthy, rich, native history, well documented in the Alutiiq Museum in downtown Kodiak. There’s a Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Center nearby, commemorating Teddy Roosevelt’s ‘bear park,’ which comprises most of the island. There’s also a maritime museum and a cultural, historical museum (Baranof Museum) as well. America’s oldest Russian Orthodox Church is immaculate and open for services and visitors across the street. Look for the bright-blue onion dome.

Kodiak City – one of Alaska’s oldest commercial fishing settlements – has come of age as a top sport fishing and marine wildlife viewing destination. The friendly town has many excellent facilities for housing and feeding travelers, and supplies all the essentials for a great fishing, outdoor experience.
