In Medieval England and across northern Europe, many churches were fortified against attack. The Castle on Charles, originally an Episcopal church, was built over a 100 years ago in the manner of an English castle - very similar in fact to Castle Rochester in England - featuring a forty foot tower with crenellations, arches, a cathedral ceiling, gothic lanterns, and iron chandeliers. The huge fireplace is a recent addition.

After decades of church service, 19 Charles Street was bought by Rabi Frederik Solomon, NH art curator, who turned it into the New England Art Gallery and Studio. Solomon came to New Hampshire via Cuba were he served, after fleeing his native Germany when his synagogue was torched by the Nazis.

After Solomon died in 1980, decades of misuse and abandonment took its toll on The Castle. Recent years of renovation, however, have renewed 19 Charles Street into an architectural gem, opening it to the public once again ... this time bringing the community together for good fun and great memories!
